Dated from copies from the same edition on Jisc c1875. Sixteen volumes bound in eight. A handsome set bound in leather and marbled boards of this collection of novels by the noted English writer and politician. he coined famous phrases such as "the great unwashed," "the pen is mightier than the sword," "dweller on the threshold," and the opening phrase "it was a dark and stormy night." Comprising Pelham, Eugene Aram, Ernest Maltravers, Alice, The Parisians (in two volumes), Kenelm Chillingly, Pausanias: The Spartan, Disowned, Devereux, Last Days of Pompeii, Godolphin, Last of the Barons, A Strange Story, Falkland and Zicci , and Coming Race. These volumes were bound in without the frontispieces. CONDITION In a half calf binding with marbled boards and edges, five raised bands, and gilt decorations to the spine. Externally excellent with only minor shelf wear. Internally, firmly bound. With a faint minor scattered spotting to the occasional leaf, particularly to the first and last few; otherwise, the pages are generally bright and clean throughout. Lacking the frontispieces.
