Diakonov Comments: P. V. Matveev Articles: I. O. Shaitakov, P. V. Matveev Illustrations: I. G. Makarevich William Thackeray's novel "Vanity Fair" (1848) firmly entered the list of recognized masterpieces of not only English, but also world literature. The writer not without guile gave his creation the subtitle "A novel without a hero": the story told in this work includes a great number of characters who lived in the era of the strongest historical upheaval, which went down in history under the name of the "Napoleonic Wars". Lives and destinies, love and death, victories and defeats - this and much more will find the interested reader on the pages of the novel. This edition publishes a translation by Mikhail Diakonov in the 1930s, which is still considered the most authentic. The book is the first to reproduce in full the cycle of illustrations to the novel, executed in the 1980s by the famous Russian artist Igor Makarevich in the etching technique, with each illustration presented in two versions, which correspond to two states of the printing board (soft varnish, aquatint). The appendix includes an article on Thackeray's novel, biographical articles on the translator and the author of the illustrations, a map of London in 1814, and commentaries written especially for this edition. ABOUT THE ARTIST At first glance, the biography of artist Igor Makarevich is quite laconic: he was born, studied, worked, designed, painted and exhibited. And again: painted, decorated and - exhibited, exhibited, exhibited.... And so all my life. All creative life. And it is the artist Igor Makarevich - oh, what a long: as long as the early sixties of the last century and - to our days. Without almost half a century comes out. And how many ahead.
