Description

The Scots Magazine was found in 1739, and claims to be the world's oldest magazine still in publication today (although with gaps in its publication history). It merged with Edinburgh Magazine and Literary Miscellany in 1804. It was intended as a Scottish rival to the London-based Gentleman's Magazine, covering a diverse range of Scottish interest issues, amongst wider global subjects of interest. Following a large gap in publication from the 1930s, when it had been withdrawn, The Scots Magazine was again published From December 1887 until 1893, under the new ownership of S. Cowan of Perth. There is a strong Christian focus during this period. Issues from this period are particularly scarce, and are presented here... 5 matching volumes comprising: Vol. 1: New Series - Vol I; December 1887 - May, 1888, 480pp; Vol. 2: New Series - Vol II; June - November, 1888, 472pp; Vol. 3: New Series - Vol III; December 1988- May, 1889, 476pp; Vol. 5: New Series - Vol V; December 1989- May, 1890, 476pp; and; Vol. 6: New Series - Vol VI; June - November, 1890, 476pp. (Missing Vol. 4 in the run). Also additional publishers are credited for different cities: Houlston & Son, London; J. Menzies & Co., Edinburgh; J.Menzies & Co., Wm. Love, W. & R. Holmes and C.L. Wright, Glasgow. A good set of 5 black hardback volumes with leather spines and corners, with raised bands, gilt decoration and morocco title labels. The cloth covering is a black chagrin style material. Covers are scuffed and bumped with some discoloration. Volumes 1 and 3 with cracked and weak front joints, but all still bound. Vol 3 with loss to leather on spine. With age spotting to endpapers. The text itself is very good - generally bright and clean throughout. With a few pencil annotations to rear endpapers. Nicely marbled edges to text block. Text in English. This is a beautiful set that's 250 y/o & is in great condition; it surpassed expectations. The shipping was surprisingly quick. However, probably the most amazing thing was that these 8 books were so well packed, in such reinforced cardboard, individually bubble wrapped, that I swear, if you dropped that box off a 3 story building, I doubt a single corner would even get dinged. This went from the UK to the US, mind you. This dealer's a pro and you can feel safe when you buy from Farang Shop UK!
