Description

A PRIZE-WINNING NOVEL SET IN RURAL 19TH-CENTURY IOWA THIS WAS MARGARET WILSON'S FIRST NOVEL AND IT CAUSED QUITE A STIR WHEN IT WAS PUBLISHED IN 1923. It is set in rural Iowa at the time of the American Civil War and it deals with the lives of Scottish pioneers , a community she knew a lot about since she herself was born in Iowa in 1882 into a family she described as . . . "poor but strong and loving farmers." Even though it was an immediately popular book, there was some surprise when it won the Pulitzer a year after it appeared. THE AUTHOR SAID OF HERSELF THAT SHE WROTE BOTH CONSCIOUSLY and unconsciously for women. One of the central characters in the novel is a woman who was seduced and ill-handled, a situation leading to dramatic scenes and revenge. It is a powerful story, written in clear and uncluttered prose. THIS IS ONE OF THE ATTRACTIVE LIMITED EDITIONS published for subscribers to The Franklin Library's collection of Pulitzer Prize winners. The Able McClaughlins won the 1924 prize and this Franklin edition came out a half century later in 1977. All the Franklin Library books were beautifully produced - and this one is certainly one of the most appealing. It is bound in full leather dyed green with gilt lettering and a striking design that makes it stand out on the shelf of any private library. The moire silk end pages are in apricot as is the page-marker ribbon. The page ends are in gold for a very pleasing appearance. The cover designs extend to the spine that has four raised hubs. It is a nice book. AT A TIME WHEN CLASSIC BOOKS ARE FOUND READILY IN INEXPENSIVE PAPERBACK as well as in affordable hardcover editions, many book lovers seek leather-bounds like this one for their collections simply because they are so pleasing to handle, see and own. We appreciate that. Ms Wilson's text is adorned by the unique\ brown-toned illustrations of artist Dennis Luczak (see examples above). ++ All books sold by Mackie Books are packaged in bubbles. Excellent Ebayer! Great communication, extremely well packaged (bubble wrap, fragile sticker on the outside, clean well packed box). Fast shipping and item described exactly with clear pics on the item from bidding.
