About the Book: The Passíusálmar or Passion Hymns are a collection of 50 poetic texts written by the Icelandic minister and poet, Hallgrímur Pétursson. The texts explore the Passion narrative, as traditionally presented, from the point where Christ enters the Garden of Gethsemane to his death and burial. Hallgrímur began composing the work in 1656, while serving as pastor of Saurbær in Hvalfjörður. It took him three years to complete, the final poem being written in May 1659; the first edition was published seven years later, in 1666. About the author: Hallgrímur Pétursson, born in 1614 in Hólar, Iceland, was a highly esteemed religious poet. Despite coming from a respected family, Pétursson led a wayward life. As a young boy, he ran away to Copenhagen, where he worked as a blacksmith's apprentice. Bishop Brynjólfur Sveinsson influenced his life trajectory, and Pétursson later attended the Danish Vor Frue Skole, receiving a classical education in Latin. In 1636, Pétursson took on the significant task of reintroducing Christianity to a group of Icelanders who had been held captive by Algerian pirates for nine years. Among the captives was Gudridur Símonardóttir, a 38-year-old woman who bore a child by Pétursson and later became his wife. Returning to Iceland, Pétursson engaged in various occupations, including laborer and fisherman, before eventually becoming a parson at Saurbær from 1651 to 1669. Despite contracting leprosy, Pétursson produced his magnum opus, the "50 Passiusálmar" in 1666, known as "The Passion Hymns of Iceland." These hymns are regarded as some of the world's finest religious poetry, where the poet intimately intertwines his personal suffering with the narrative of Jesus. The Passion Hymns had a profound impact on the morale of a despondent people and quickly gained widespread popularity upon their first printing in 1666. To honor Hallgrímur Pétursson, the Hallgrímskirkja, a memorial church in Reykjavík, stands as one of Iceland's largest and finest churches. A Book Review:139.99 5/5 stars - Spiritual and Literary Moments for Reflection Hallgrimur Petursson's "Hymns of the Passion" is a remarkable literary treasure that intensifies the retreat into spiritual reflection that one enters when taking it up. The hymns have been beautifully translated from the Icelandic by Aurthur Charles Cook, who by all accounts, has done a remarkable job of keeping the English as close to the rhyming nature of the original. The hymns interweave the accounts of Passion from the Gospels. The book divides the Passion up into 100 short chapters that make for easy reading. Verses take turns recounting the story of the Passion and offering a deep spiritual reflection. The Hymns could make for inspirational source material for sermons and certainly have much to offer in deepening devotional time or family reading. This little book is belongs among the greatest writings of Christianity and just happens to be well put together in word and depth of feeling. --Barry Ratzliff Copyright © 2018-2023 TDM Inc. I can't rate this seller highly enough. They were earnest to stick to shipping times promised but realized the product they had was not what was not the quality pictured, so they messaged me ahead of time with solutions (full refund, return the original and get a new item or keep what was sent with a partial refund.) I chose the full refund/new item - it came quickly and packaged so well! I appreciate also that they use recycled items for packaging. Thanks for a great eBay shopping experience.

I was so happy to find this book! It arrived within a couple of days. It was wrapped perfectly and was exactly as described. It looks like it has never been touched except for a handwritten note on the first page. I don’t know either the person who bought it new or the recipient but the words of love make me happy. It is an older book and a little more than than I wanted to pay but is totally worth it! Thank you Yesterdaze Closet!
