This auction is for a First Edition volume of "Mervyn Clitheroe" by William Harrison Ainsworth. First published in complete book form in 1858 (preceded only by the parts issues). Includes a signed letter from Ainsworth tipped in, where he discusses a book he is writing (dated Dec 30, 1858). Later brown smooth calf bound by Sangorski and Surcliffe, with gilt decoration and lettering, all edges gilt, and a matching marbled paper slipcase. Complete, with all 24 illustrations (22 plates plus the frontispiece and vignette title) by "Phiz" (a.k.a. Hablot K. Browne). Faults listed above. Otherwise clean pages and tight binding.
