ABOUT THE BOOK Translation: M. L. Gasparov Comments: M. L. Andreev Articles: M. L. Gasparov, M. L. Andreev, R. M. Gorokhova Illustrations: G. Dore. The frontispiece reproduces an engraved portrait of Ludovico Ariosto by Enea Vico (1523-1567). The famous poem by Ludovico Ariosto (1474-1533), composed in 1516-1532, is unusual in form. It begins almost half-heartedly, picking up the plot of M. Boiardo's now-forgotten poem "Roland in Love" (1495). To the sixty-nine songs of Boiardo Ariosto added forty-six more of his own. The poem is characterized by an innumerable number of characters, a whimsical interweaving of plot lines, which creates a picture of an endless fantastic world continuously unfolding before the reader's gaze. it is this property of Ariosto's work that is revealed in the unsurpassed quality of illustrations by Gustave Doré (1832-1883). The edition contains a full translation by M. L. Gasparov in verilibre and reproduces the complete cycle of Doré's illustrations created by the artist for the French edition of 1879. The appendices section contains detailed commentaries, a character index, and articles devoted, in particular, to the perception of Ariosto's work in Russia. ABOUT THE ARTIST Gustave Doré (1832-1883) was born in Strasbourg into the family of Pierre-Louis Doré, a bridge engineer, the son of an officer in Napoleon's army who died at Waterloo. His mother, born Alexandrine Plushar, came from a wealthy bourgeois family. In 1841, the Dore family moved to the city of Bourg, where the father of the future artist was transferred. FROM THE TRANSLATOR This translation of Ariosto's "The Stoic Roland" is not made in the conventional "original size" traditional for Russian translations - 5-stop iambic iambic in octaves with alternating male and female rhymes, as if transmitting the Italian sillabic 11-syllabic in octaves with continuous female rhymes.
