Out of print ABOUT THE BOOK Comments: G. V. Krasnov, N. M. Fortunatov Illustrations: A. P. Apsit The text of one of Leo Tolstoy's most famous works, combining the form of a philosophical-psychological novel and historical epic, is presented in this four-volume book accompanied by a full cycle of illustrations by the artist A. P. Apsit (1880-1944). The illustrations were first published by the publishing house of I. D. Sytin in 1912 (for the centenary of the Patriotic War of 1812). The appendix contains extensive commentary, as well as a biographical sketch about the artist. AUTHOR'S PREAMBLE In printing this work, on which I have put five years of incessant and exceptional labor, under the best conditions of life, I wanted in the preface to this work to set forth my view of it and thereby prevent those perplexities that may arise in the readers. I wanted the readers not to see or look for in my book what I did not want or could not express, and to pay attention to what I wanted to express, but on what (according to the conditions of the work) I did not consider it convenient to dwell. PREAMBLE TO THE COMMENTS "War and Peace" is one of the highest achievements of Tolstoy's artistic genius. The book required a tremendous effort from the writer. In 1869, in the drafts of the "Epilogue" Tolstoy recalled that "excruciating and joyful persistence and excitement," about which he worked "in the course of seven years" (since 1863) on his work. These were years of "incessant - in his own words - and exceptional labor under the best conditions of life" ("A few words about the book" War and Peace "). ABOUT THE ARTIST Alexander Petrovich Apsitis (Apsitis, 25.3 (6.4.) 1880, Riga - 1944, Germany) was born in the family of a blacksmith. In 1898-1899 he studied in the studio of L. E. Dmitriev-Kavkazsky in St. Petersburg, then went to New Athos, illustrated books about the Athos Monastery, performed wall paintings. In 1901 he returned to St. Petersburg and began to draw for the magazine "Rodina".
