ABOUT THE BOOK Translation from French: V. N. Andreev, I. V. Bulatovsky, V. E. Vasiliev, A. L. Dmitrenko, I. I. Dmitriev, V. V. Zhukov, et al. General Editorial, Article, Comments: V. E. Vasiliev Illustrations: G. Doré The fables of Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695) not only completed the formation of this satirical genre in French literature of the XVII century, but also raised it to an unattainable height. La Fontaine, on the one hand, familiarizes the reader with the wisdom of many peoples, borrowing plots from such coriphets as Aesop, Phaedrus, Bilpais, Lokman, as his compatriots Rabelais, Marot and many others, and on the other hand, translates the fable from dry moralizing into a lyrical narrative, where the moral, which the poet called the soul of the fable, is not imposed on the reader, but rather, with some irony, is presented as a subject for mutual reflection. All twelve books of the fable writer (250 fables) are for the first time given in interpretations of Russian classics of the XVIII - first half of the XIX century, in the performance of poets of the late XIX - early XX century and in translations of poets of the latest time. The edition is unique in the presence of new translations (about 90 of them, i.e. almost one third of the total number), mostly made especially for this edition or included for the first time in the complete collection of fables. For the first time, the prefaces by La Fontaine, which precede each volume, and his "Life of Aesop" have been translated into Russian. For the first time in Russia, the complete cycle of engravings by Gustave Doré, considered an unrivaled masterpiece of book illustration, was reproduced. ABOUT THE ARTIST Gustave Doré (1832-1883) was born in Strasbourg to an engineer's family. From childhood he showed an aptitude for drawing. Nevertheless, his parents hoped that the young man would enter a polytechnic school. But the passion for drawing won, although Gustave did not receive any special artistic education. In 1847, the Dore family moved to Paris. LIST OF TRANSLATORS Andreev Victor Nikolaevich (b. 1945) Bulatovsky Igor Valeryevich Bulatovsky (b. 1971) Vasiliev Vladimir Efimovich (b. 1929) G-t (probably a pseudonym of Natalia Petrovna Grot, née Semyonova; 1825-1899) Alexei Leonidovich Dmitrenko (b. 1971)
