Year of publication: 2020 ISBN: 978-5-93898-734-0 Pages: 448 Illustrations: 41 Print run: 700 copies. ABOUT THE BOOK Text preparation, notes, article: I. N. Sukhikh Illustrations: S. I. Filippova "Dark Alleys" - is not an ordinary collection of stories, but the only book in the work of I. A. Bunin (1870-1953), the first Russian Nobel Prize winner, compiled by the writer himself. It was written in three installments, on the eve and in the midst of World War II: 1937-1938,1940-1941,1943-1945. The first edition of the collection (New York, 1943) included only 11 stories. The second edition (Paris, 1946) included 38 texts, distributed in three sections, and it was reprinted all the stories from the first edition, except for "April". Much later the writer composed two more texts - "Overnight" and "In Spring, in Judea" - which he intended to include in the book. But in this form he did not have time to publish it. Usually these two stories are mechanically added at the end of "Dark Alleys", destroying Bunin's thought-out composition. In this edition, the author's intention is restored. The collection consists of different genre forms - from sketch, scene, prose poem to the classic novella and narrative story. The place of action of the vast majority of stories - pre-revolutionary Russia, which appears as a huge enchanted territory of love. "Sunstroke" in "Dark Alleys" has, as a rule, two denouements: parting (for a long time or forever) or death (parting forever). Bunin ultimately transforms the physics of sex and the metaphysics of love into the ethereal dazzling light of memory. "Dark Alleys" - restoration of the instantaneous time of love in the eternal time of Russia, its nature, its past frozen in its bygone splendor. Illustrations to the text of the novel are made by the famous Moscow artist Svetlana Filippova at the suggestion of the publishing house "Vita Nova". ABOUT THE ARTIST Svetlana Ilinichna Filippova was born in 1968 in Alma-Ata. In 1991 she graduated from the Philological Faculty of the Kazakh State University, and in 1997 - Higher Courses of Scriptwriters and Directors in Moscow, specializing in animation directing.
