Year of publication: 2009 ISBN: 978-5-93898-248-26 Pages: 512 Illustrations: 124 Print run: 1100 copies. Out of print ABOUT THE BOOK Translation from the Ancient Greek: V. A. Zhukovsky Articles: A. Taho-Godi and Iv. Tolstoy Notes: S. Osherov Illustrations: F. Preller, I. G. Tischbein, B. Genelli, K. von Heberlin, W. Unger and others. The ancient Greek epic poem "The Odyssey", just like "The Iliad", was created in the first third of the 1st millennium B.C. Unlike the heroic themes of "The Iliad", the poem about Odysseus' wanderings contains mostly fairy-tale material. Its plot is based on the story, widespread in world folklore, of a husband who, after long wanderings, returns unrecognized to his homeland on the day of his wife's new wedding. Homer's poems had a huge impact on world literature, enriched poetry with the canonical size - hexameter, gave food for the study of everyday life and manners of antiquity, inspired many artists and sculptors. This edition presents one of the most famous verse translations of "The Odyssey" by V. A. Zhukovsky (1849). The book is provided with notes, articles on the artistic originality of the poem, as well as on the peculiarities of the published translation. Illustrations by German artists of the XIX century - contemporaries of the translator of the poem - are reproduced. ABOUT TRANSLATION Already on the slope of years, physically tired, but still possessing the full force of his talent and the perfection of technique, which is given to the master only by years of long labor, Zhukovsky, "at the time it is the parent in Russia of German romanticism and poetic uncle of devils and witches, German and English," as he once called himself in a letter to one of his friends, suddenly ignited his old dream: to open to Russian literature the doors of the antique "Eden" to introduce it into the new for it world of Homeric fantasies, giving it in true verse Russian translation the true Odyssey.
