N. Veselovsky Afterword: R. I. Khlodovsky Comments: M. L. Andreev Illustrations: J. Vagre "The Decameron" - the pinnacle of creativity of the great Italian writer-humanist Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375). This collection of novellas is a classic work of Italian literature that epitomized the free thought of the Renaissance. Boccaccio tells the story of seven young women and three young men who retreat to a country villa during the plague that ravaged Florence in 1348. Over the course of ten days, they tell each other short stories - hence the book's title: 'Decameron' means 'Ten Days' in Greek. Giving a broad realistic picture of life in the Italian society of his time, Boccaccio glorifies the enjoyment of life and sensual love. This edition includes an afterword on Boccaccio's life and works and extensive commentary. The book is illustrated with engravings by the outstanding French painter and graphic artist Jacques Vagre (1846-1908), created for the Paris edition of 1890.
