Stephen Vincent Benét, who lived from 1898 – 1943, was an American poet, short story writer, and novelist; he was a poet superbly matched to is subject. Born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, into a military family that moved a great deal, he spent his formative years in New York, Illinois, California, George, and North Carolina. Benet's grandfather had fought in the Civil War. Poetry became a habit of mind for Stephen, as it was for the whole Benet family. Benet published his first book of poems shortly after entering Yale University. John Brown, who lived from 1800 – 1859, was a white American abolitionist who believed armed insurrection was the only way to overthrow the institution of slavery in the U.S. During the 1856 conflict in KANSAS, Brown commanded forces at the Battle of Black Jack. Brown's followers killed five slavery supporters at Pottawatomie. In 1859, Brown led an unsuccessful raid on the federal armory at Harper's Ferry that ended with the multi-racial group's capture. Benet wrote: "They reached the Maryland bridge of Harper's Ferry That Sunday night. There were twenty-two in all, Nineteen were under thirty, three not twenty one, Kagi, the self-taught scholar, quiet and cool, Sevens, the cashiered soldier, Puritan-fathered, A singing giant, gunpower-tempered and rash. . ." Brown's trial resulted in his conviction and a sentence of death by hanging. Brown was tried for treason against the Commonwealth of Virginia, the murder of five men and inciting a slave insurrection. He was found guilty on all counts and was hanged. Benet said about writing JOHN BROWN: "What I was trying to do was to show certain realities, legends, ideas, landscapes, ways of living, face of men that were ours, that did not belong to any other country." 371 pages.
