Description
Franklin library leather edition of Walker Percy's "The Thanatos Syndrome," a Limited edition, Frontispiece by Jim Spanfeller, one of the SIGNED FIRST EDITION series, PERSONALLY SIGNED by Walker Percy, published in 1987. Bound in hunter green leather, the book has marbled paper end leaves, acid-free paper, hubbed spine, satin book marker, gold gilt on three edges---in near FINE condition. Walker Percy, who lived from 1916-1990, was born in Birmingham, Alabama. After his father's suicide when Walker was 13, and his mother's accidental death two years later, he and his brothers were reared by Will Percy, a bachelor cousin and the author of "Lanterns on the Levee." Percy attended Greenville, Mississippi, High School where his best friend was SHELBY FOOTE, later a noted Civil War historian. They both attended the University of North Carolina---Chapel Hill. In 1941, Percy graduated from medical school at COLUMBIA but became a writer after catching tuberculosis. "The Thanatos Syndrome was Percy's last novel and is a sequel to "Love in the Ruins." Set in the near future in Feliciana, the novel tells the story of an imprisoned psychiatrist, TOM MORE, who is freed and returns to his town with the active members demonstrating new mysterious behaviors. He suspects that something or someone is making everyone in his town crazy and reversing them to be like primitive apes. Tom is a lapsed Catholic, and when he comes home, his practice and marriage are in near collapse. Tom teams up with his cousin, LUCY, an epidemiologist, and they discover that the authorities, a consortium of scientists, have been running secret trials on the population of the town by "poisoning" the water supply. This has affected the citizens memory and their sexual appetite. Tom has hit rock bottom and involves a Catholic priest, Father Smith, in hope of relief. Dr. Tom is a "far cry from the saint," drinks too much, and watches reruns on MASH, but he cares. Father Smith, the priest, is equally fallible. Percy may be suggesting that Western medicine cannot cure the ills of its citizens. 372 pages. I offer combines shipping.

Seller earns high marks for very safe wrapping, quick delivery and right price. Book is in excellent condition. To no fault of seller, and unusual deviation of normal high standards of the publisher, I would not recommend this book to others. It has has very disappointing photography that distracts from art of Rodin. But I highly recommend the seller.
