John Hoyer Updike, who lived from 1932--2009, was an American novelist and short story writer. " Rabbit Redux," the second volume in a tetralogy of 'Rabbit' books, examines the life of Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, a one-time high school basketball star from Brewer, Pennsylvania. Eleven years later Harry, the modern Everyman wants to know life in all its dimensions, to see what it can offer. Rabbit and Janice are living together again with their thirteen-year-old son, Nelson. Rabbit's father, Earl, reveals his suspicion, based on gossip, that Janice is having an affair. Rabbit Run was the story of a man's attempt to run away from the responsibilities of home, family, marriage and work. "Rabbit Redux" is the story of return and reconciliation. In the second novel, Janice is the one seeking sexual freedom and release from responsibility and is enjoying sex with Charlie Stavros, who works with her at Springer Motors, her father's used car lot. Ultimately, Janice leaves and moves in with Stravros. Rabbit then engages in a sexual affair with an eighteen-year-old runaway from a wealthy Connecticut family. For Rabbit, Jill is much more than his lover. She brings home books on yoga, Zen, and psychiatry, cooks health food, plays the guitar, discusses God, beauty, and the meaning of life. Janice considers Jill an "unsavoary influence" on Nelson and even Stavros asks Rabbit why he is living with a radical, drug-using, hippie teenager. When Skeeter, a black revolutionary Vietnam veteran who has jumped bail on a drug charge, lands on his doorstep, Rabbit is shaken. By the end of "Rabbit Redux," Rabbit is purged at last. 454 pages.
