Description
Franklin Library leather edition of MacKinlay Kantor's "Andersonville," Illustrated by Joseph Smith, one of the PULITZER PRIZE series, published in 1976. Bound in navy blue leather, the book has gold French moire silk end leaves, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, a satin book marker, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in near FINE condition---except for 'minor' imperfection to gilt on fore edge. Mackinlay Kantor, who lived from 1904-1977, was a newspaper reporter. However, Bruce Catton, a Civil War historian, wrote "It's the best Civil War novel I have ever read. . .a book that picks up the heartache and the tragedy, the desperate viciousness and the reasonless, inexplicable violence and destruction of that terrible conflict." Kantor tells the story through the eyes of his central character, IRA CLAFFEY, a humane Georgian on whose land the prison is built. From February 1864 to May 1865, more than 40,000 Federal soldiers would be subjected to starvation, filth, and disease within the stockade's twenty-six acres. Nearly 13,000 men would die under the prison command of Captain HENRY WIRZ, later sentenced to the gallows for atrocities committed against the prisoners. 897 pages. Combined shipping is available.
