Henry James, who lived from 1843-1916, was born in New York City, but grew up in Europe and the U.S. He graduated from HARVARD and entered Law School in 1862 but was bored after a year and returned to Europe where he lived for most of his life. "The Ambassadors," originally published in 1903, is the story of LAMBERT STRETHER, an intelligent, conscientious American editor, is sent by his wealthy finance, MRS. NEWSOME, a rigorously conventional Massachusetts widow, to bring her son Chad home. When Strether arrives in Paris he discovers the young man much changed by his Old World environment and his relations with the charming Countess Marie de Vionnet. She appears to be Chad's mistress. Gradually Strether becomes fascinated with Parisian life. . .and a new group is sent after him, including Chad's aggressively proper sister, MRS.
