Charles Dickens, who lived from 1812-1870, was born near PORTSMOUTH, England but his family moved to LONDON when he was two years old. The novel follows the fortunes of a shipping firm owner, who is frustrated at the lack of a son to follow him in his footsteps. He initially rejected his daughter's love before finally becoming reconciled with her. The novel has themes of arranged marriages, child cruelty, betrayal, deceit, and relations between people of from different social classes. The book begins when his son is born and Dombey's wife dies shortly after giving birth. Dombey is rich, proud, and the rigid head of shipping firm. Dombey employs a wet nurse, Mrs. Richards (Toodle). Dombey already has a six-year-old daughter, Florence, but neglects her. The father's love and hopes are centered in the boy, his heir, Paul, who is odd and delicate. The boy is sent to Dr. Blimber's school, where he becomes sick and dies. Dombey marries a proud, penniless widow, Edith Granger, but his arrogant treatment drives her into relations with his villainous manager, CARKER, with whom she flees to France. The House of Dombey fails. Carker meets Dombey in front of a train in France, where Carker falls and is killed. Dombey has lost his fortune, his son, and his wife. Other notable characters include Solomon Gills, the nautical instrument-maker and uncle of Walter Gay, and his friend Cuttle, the genial old sea-captain; Susan Nipper, Florence's devoted servant; Toots, the innocent and humble admirer of Florence; Joe Bagstock, the gouty retired Major; and 'Cousin Feenix.' the good-natured aristocrat. 917 pages---a RARE title.
