Description
Franklin Library leather edition of Bernard DeVoto's "Across the Wide Missouri," a Limited edition, Illustrated with Paintings by Alfred Jacob Miller and Charles Bodner, one of the PULITZER PRIZE CLASSICS series, published in 1984. Bound in green leather, the book has marbled paper end leaves, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, a satin book marker, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in near FINE condition. Bernard DeVoto, who lived from 1897-1955, was a Utah-born professor of English at Northwestern University and Harvard University, 1929-36. "Across the Wide Missouri" won the PULITZER PRIZE for HISTORY in 1947 and the Bancroft Prize. The book tells the compelling story of the climax and decline of the Rocky Mountain fur trade during the 1830s. It portrays the mountain fur trade as a way of business and a way of life, vividly illustrating how it shaped the expansion of the American West. DeVeto took a journey through the West, tracing the trail of Lewis and Clark, whose journals he would later edit and he became interested in the fur trading industry of the 19th century. 452 pages.
