Description
STORY OF FUTILE LOVE BY ACCLAIMED SOUTHERN WRITER - SIGNED BY AUTHOR MARY LEE SETTLE WAS AN AMERICAN WRITER BORN IN WEST VIRGINIA who led a full and varied life. A novelist and non-fiction writer, she was a 1978 winner of the National Book Award for her novel Blood Tie and she was a founder of the annual PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction . In the Thirties she hoped to parlay her good looks into a career in modelling and film and got a screen test for the part of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind . But the part went, of course, to Vivien Leigh . In World War 2, she joined the British Women's Auxiliary Air Force and later the Office of War Information . She lived for many years in England, Canada and Turkey. She died in 2005 at the age of 87. HER FAME WAS TO COME FROM HER EXPRESSIVE WRITING, most notably The Beulah Quinte t novels which focus on the history of her home state. The book we offer here`- Charley Bland - was published in 1989. It has been called a bittersweet story of doomed love, a narrative about a woman who returns from Europe to West Virginia and her relationship with her love of the past. Like many novels set in the South, the tale is suffused with local culture and sensitivities, and by the tensions between the old and the new in the region . THIS BOOK WAS PUBLISHED WITH ALL THE CARE AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL that we came to expect from The Franklin Library. It is one of Franklin's Signed First Edition series and it is bound in black-dyed leather with a bold and modern design pressed in gilt on both the front and rear covers. Elements of the design are continued on to the spine which has three raised hubs. The sewn-in ribbon page marker is in jade green and contrasts nicely with the cover's color. The striking frontispiece illustration by Michael Dudash i s rendered in black-and-white. The book appears to have been hardly touched down the years - but there is a scratch mark on the gilded front page edge th at may have been made when the book was removed from its plastic wrapper. This minor flaw allows us to reduce the price. Mary Lee Settle's signature is written boldly in ink on an inside page (see picture above) .
