Description

POWER POLITICS AND RELIGIOUS TENSIONS OF ANCIENT EGYPT AUTHOR ALLEN DRURY'S MOST FAMOUS NOVEL IS ADVISE AND CONSENT and it won the Pulitzer Prize for him. It is an insider's look at high-level politics in Washington DC . The writer drew on his experiences as a political journalist to tell his tale. For this novel, Drury takes us to another continent and a much earlier time - Ancient Egypt , the time of the Pharaohs and one of the most creative and intriguing periods of human history. Drury's skill was to untangle the complex political threads woven by powerful people in the American capital. He applies the same skill to his telling of this story. Swap the Potomac for the Nile - and the blue suits of DC for the robes of the ancient Egyptians. A GOD AGAINST ALL GODS is about the attempt by Pharaoh Akhenaten to establish a new religion in Egypt, a monotheistic belief system, and the fierce resistance to his plan by priests and adherents to other gods. The book is constructed in the form of monologues by different characters. To help his readers through the complexities of the relationships in the Later 18th Dynasty of the House of Thebes , a family tree is provided and the novel's principal characters are listed as you would find in the program for a stage play. It is a fascinating story, a page-turner, and it reminds us that people have not changed all that much down the millenia when it comes to the exercise of political power - and also that organized religion is a major human force. THIS VOLUME IS PART OF FRANKLIN'S LIMITED FIRST EDITION SERIES and it was issued in 1976 to subscribers in an arrangement with the publishers of the trade edition. It is a very handsome book bound in leather dyed a rich maroon with an Egyptian-inspired gilt design on both front and rear covers, the design extending to the spine with its four raised hubs. The end pages are moire silk in dusky gold with the ribbon page marker in the same hue. The page edges are gilded. There are no signs of prior ownership such as an inscription are a bookplate. This book is of gift quality. It is enhanced by striking double-page illustrations by the American artist Ted CoConis , known especially for his artwork in children's book (examples are given above). Excellent Ebayer! Great communication, extremely well packaged (bubble wrap, fragile sticker on the outside, clean well packed box). Fast shipping and item described exactly with clear pics on the item from bidding.
