Description

Easton Press leather edition of Ernest Hemingway's "Winner Take Nothing," a COLLECTOR'S edition, Illustrated by Alan Phillips, one of the COLLECTED WORKS OF ERNEST HEMINGWAY series, published in 1990. Bound in chocolate brown leather with a man in the center of the front board, the book has acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, the book has camel tan moire silk end leaves, satin book marker, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in FINE condition. Ernest Hemingway, who lived from 1899-1961, grew up in Oak Forest, Illinois, the son of a medical doctor and a musical---but domineering mother. Hemingway was married four times: Hadley Richardson, his Arkansas wife, Pauline Pfeiffer, Martha Gellhorn, and Mary Hemingway. Fourteen stories include: "After the Storm," which is based on an account told to Hemingway about the 1928 sinking of the Spanish steamer, the SS VALBANERA off the Florida Keys in 1919. "A Clean, Well-lighted Place;" "The Light of the World," is one of the NICK ADAMS stories about two men in Michigan and five prostitutes. "God Rest You Merry, Gentleman" takes place during Christmas time and centers around a hospital and its staff. A local boy came to the hospital and indicated that he had been having "feeling of lust" which he believed was a sin. He asked the doctor to castrate him, but the doctor refused. "The Sea Change" is a story of a married couple having an argument in a bar. The wife has had an affair with another woman and the husband is wrestling with the idea of divorcing her. "A Way You'll Never Be," "The Mother of a Queen" is the story of a bullfighter who is referred to as a "queen." "One Reader Writes" is in the form of an advice column. The reader writes that her husband had contracted syphilis while stationed in Shanghai and she asks the columnist whether the "malady" could be cured. "Homage to Switzerland" takes place in a Swiss train station where one man asks the waitress whether she will sit and drink with him and he then offers her money to have sex with him. Other stories include: "A Day's Wait," "A Natural History of the Dead," "Wine of Wyoming," which takes place during the Prohibition Era with a French immigrant couple who sell bootlegged beer and wine out of their home. "The Gambler, the Nun, and the Radio," and "Fathers and Sons." 162 pages. I offer combined shipping.

Seller earns high marks for very safe wrapping, quick delivery and right price. Book is in excellent condition. To no fault of seller, and unusual deviation of normal high standards of the publisher, I would not recommend this book to others. It has has very disappointing photography that distracts from art of Rodin. But I highly recommend the seller.

Quite the surprised, at first I thought I ordered something from a pet shop because of the box turns out to be my order xD. My books were well packaged no noticeable box damage internally and externally. They were as described in the listing and shipped promptly in a 2 weeks window. Would recommend seller.
