Easton Press leather edition of Katherine Anthony's "Dolly Madison: Her Life and Times," a COLLECTOR'S edition, one of the LIBRARY OF AMERICAN HISTORY series, published in 1995. Bound in burgundy leather, the book has decorative paper end leaves, satin book marker, acid-free paper, hubbed spine, gold gilt on three edges---in FINE condition. COLLECTOR'S NOTES is included. Dolly Madison, who lived from 1768-1849, was born into a Quaker family in Pennsylvania. She first married John Todd, who died during a yellow fever epidemic in 1793, leaving her with two small children. One son survived, who grew up to be a charming yet worthless scoundrel, who caused his mother lifelong heartbreak. Dolly married "the great little Madison" when she was 26 and he was 40. Despite their disparity in age and appearance---she was very "spiffy" and he was plain, standing 5'6" tall---they seemingly enjoyed a very loving marriage. Dolly was noted for her beautiful clothes and especially her turbans. As acting White House hostess for the widowed THOMAS JEFFERSON, and wife of JAMES MADISON, she held the position of FIRST LADY for 16 years. Furthermore, during her long life, she knew all the Presidents from Washington to Zachary Taylor. She also lived through two wars---the Revolution and the War of 1812. While her husband was President, the British burned the "President's house," and Dolly saved the large portrait of GEORGE WASHINGTON and a few other historical pieces of furniture. When her husband completed his two terms as President, the couple retired to Montpellier, Madison's Virginia estate where they entertained and lived peacefully with their "adoring slaves." Although he adamantly opposed slavery, when General Lafayette visited the U.S. and came to spend a week at Montpellier, he was amazed that the Madison slaves were very contented and absolutely adored Dolly and James. Although the last chapters of Dolly Madison's life are filled with much sadness----her drunken wayward son continued to "drain her financially" and disappoint her with his reckless lifestyle---she retained her characteristic cheerfulness. After her husband's death she managed "to keep the wolf" from the doors by selling the family estate and her late husband's meticulously organized papers. She eventually left Montpellier and returned to Washington, D.C. where she died---almost penniless! 426 pages, including an index---a RARE title. I offer combined shipping
