Out of print ABOUT THE BOOK Comments Off on El. V. Pasternak Articles by A. L. Dmitrenko, J. Niv, K. Parker, and Eug. B. Pasternak Illustrations by Alexander Alexeev One of the most famous works of the XX century - the novel "Doctor Zhivago" (1945-1955, published in 1957) - is the result of the work of B. Pasternak, his peak achievement, which embodied reflections on the life experience of the generation to which the author belonged, on the value of the human personality, on the historical fate of the country. World fame and the awarding of the Nobel Prize (1958) turned out for B. Pasternak brutal political harassment and accusations of treason against the country. This edition, dedicated to the fiftieth anniversary of the first publication of the book, for the first time presents to the Russian reader illustrations by artist Alexander Alexeev (1901-1982), created for the French edition of the novel in 1959 with the help of a unique "needle screen". The text of the novel is commented on. An extensive appendix is devoted to the artist's work and his invention that produced the illustrations for the novel. BLACK AND WHITE MAGIC OF ALEKSEYEV Alexeev, this magician, crossed the boundaries of the arts with ease. Engraving - lithography and etching - are techniques that utilize line, line hard and defined. For a long time, engraving served to immortalize the features of famous personalities, made available to the public works of painting that not everyone could see. It was a relatively accurate guide to the image of things. Alexeyev, however, made her play the role of a boundary breaker, a sensory bridge between the arts, between the poetry of the image and the drawing of the fabula. And even - between the still and moving, because his animated films - it is more like animated prints, as if touched by a magic branch of moving light.... NEEDLE SCREEN On the new technique used by A. Alexeev in illustrating the novel by B. Pasternak. Pasternak Trying to combine the technique of engraving and the principles of cinematography, Alexeev invented a mechanism that later became known as the needle screen. We assembled the first needle screen in 1932, and in 1933 Alexeev used it to create an animated movie - a kind of illustration of M. Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain". Years later this film became a classic of cinematography, partly because of the original technique, but above all because this technique allows Alexeev to express his special poetic vision - to convey the moment of movement. Our film has taken a place of honor in most Western film libraries.... ABOUT THE ARTIST Alexander Alexandrovich Alexeev (5 (18).4.1901, Kazan - 9.8.1982, Paris) left a huge creative legacy. In the history of cinema he is known as one of the pioneers of animation, inventor of new technologies, including the famous needle screen. However, Alekseev's activities in the field of cinema are closely connected with another, no less fruitful work in the field of book graphics. Confirmation of the relationship between these two branches of the master's work is a cycle of illustrations for "Doctor Zhivago", first presented in Russia in this edition....
