Stolbov Article: A. I. Kuprin Comments: A. A. Stolyarov Illustrations: M. Leloir "The Countess de Monsoro" (1846) - one of the most significant works of Alexandre Dumas. In this fascinating adventurous-historical novel, the writer with remarkable skill resurrects the events of the second half of the XVI century - the era of religious wars and the reign of Henry III, the last king of the Valois dynasty. The story of the tragic love of the noble Count de Bussy and the beautiful Diana de Monsoro unfolds against the background of court intrigue, political conspiracies and religious strife. In this edition for the first time published all 245 illustrations of the outstanding French artist Maurice Leloir, made by him for the Paris edition of 1903. The book is supplemented with an essay by A. I. Kuprin "Dumas-father" and detailed comments. ABOUT THE ARTIST Maurice Leloir was born in Paris on November 1, 1851. Professional education he received in the family: he was taught by his father, painter Jean-Baptiste Auguste Leloir (1809-1892), and his mother, watercolorist Héloïse Colin (1820-1874). Leloir brightly showed himself in many fields of art - as a painter, watercolorist, engraver, book illustrator, theater and film artist, a talented writer. AFTERLIFE. "The Countess de Monsoro" - the second novel in a series devoted to the era of religious wars in France. Only a few years separate the events taking place in it from the dark time of Bartholomew's Night, described by Dumas in "Queen Margot".
