This edition extended to twenty-four volumes in total. Scott has been viewed as the first English-language author to have a truly international career within his own lifetime, with many contemporary readers in Europe, Australia, and North America. His novels and poetry are still read widely, and many of his works remain classics of Scottish literature. Among the most popular and widely read novels in Europe at the time, Scott's long series of Waverley novels take their name from 'Waverley', the first novel of the series released in 1814, as Scott did not publicly acknowledge authorship until 1827. Present here are: Saint Ronan's Well; The Surgeon's Daughter; Count Robert of Paris; Castle Dangerous; The Antiquary; Waverley; The Abbot; Peveril of the Peak; Rob Roy; Guy Mannering, and The Heart of Midlothian. With a frontispiece to each volume, alongside numerous further vignette illustrations. With the morocco bookplate of W.A. Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey to the front pastedown of five volumes. William Foyle founded Foyles bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex. Beeleigh housed his library, one of the largest private libraries in England. CONDITION In the publisher's original limp calf bindings. Fading to back strips, and front board of 'Waverley', with boards otherwise bright. Loss of leather to 'Ronan's Well' back strip tail. A touch of rubbing to further back strip heads and tails. Bookplates to front pastedowns of five volumes. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.

The shipping was lightning fast, arriving in 3 days from UK to US. The book was packaged with extreme care, very important for an antique book. The overall condition of the book is also unbelievable for its age, even better than described. I’ve purchased numerous other books from this seller, and the quality and price have always been outstanding. Great eBay seller. Thanks!
