The 'Occidental Edition', limited to 750 copies, of which these are numbered 28. This 'Occidental Edition' is the scarcer series, than the more commonly seen 'Ambassador's Edition'. A beautiful travel work series, exploring Asia. These volumes look at Manchuria, Burma, India, and Persia. 'Manchuria', by Alexander Hosie, illustrated with a colour frontispiece, and five plates. Collated, complete. 'Burma', by R. Talbot Kelly, illustrated with a colour frontispiece, and five plates. Collated, complete. 'India', by J. D. Rees, illustrated with a colour frontispiece, and five plates. Collated, complete. 'Persia', by F. B. Bradley-Birt, and five plates. Collated, complete. This series explores each country in brilliant detail, providing an insight into their history and cultures, and the West's fascination with the East at the beginning of the twentieth century. CONDITION In a full morocco binding. Externally, generally smart, rubbed to the joints and spines. Lifting to the head of the spine of 'Manchuria'. Minor bumping to the extremities. Only a few minor marks to the boards. Small bump to the rear board of 'Manchuria', joints are starting a little, more so to the rear joint. Front joint of 'Burma' is a little strained but remains firm. Front hinge of 'India' is starting but firm, rear hinge is a little strained. Front joint of 'Persia' is a little strained but remains firm, front hinge is starting. Very small tide mark to the front paste down of 'Manchuria'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, pages unopened to the fore edge. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
