'The First Tour of Doctor Syntax' is the ninth edition. Illustrated with a hand-coloured frontispiece, a hand-coloured title page, and twenty-nine hand-coloured plates. Collated, complete. 'The Second Tour of Doctor Syntax, in Search of Consolation'. Illustrated with a hand-coloured frontispiece, and twenty-three hand-coloured plates. Collated, complete. 'The Third Tour of Doctor Syntax, in Search of a Wife'. Illustrated with a hand-coloured frontispiece, a hand-coloured title page, and twenty-three hand-coloured plates. Collated, complete. Nineteen plates are provided in loosely-inserted duplicates, which are less vibrantly hand-coloured. 'Doctor Syntax' is a comic character, a satire of William Gilpin. These three satirical poems show Syntax touring Britain, in order to describe his theory of the Picturesque. Written by William Combe, a British author, who is best remembered today for these three works. Illustrated by Thomas Rowlandson, a celebrated English artist and caricaturist. Each volume is undated, dated 1855 from Jisc from copies held at the University of Liverpool Library. CONDITION In a half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, worn. Volume I is lacking part of the backstrip to the head, with a smaller amount of loss to the tail of Volume III. Lacking all but one spine label, the label to the head of the spine of Volume III is present but chipped and cracked. Tape to the tail of the spine of Volume III, holding the front board to the spine, otherwise front board is detached. Rubbing to the leather. Spines are faded. Light bumping to the extremities. Boards of Volume I are a little discoloured, with fading to the head of the rear board. Front board of Volume I is held by one cord only, rear joint and hinge are strained. Hinges of Volume II are strained. Rear hinge of Volume III is strained. Bookseller's label to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with some scattered spots. Preface to Volume III appears to be excised from another edition and bound in here after the title, with a tape repair to the margin. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
