The present collection if of an early edition of 1840, both first and second series bound in one volume. Charles Lamb's essays were very popular in the nineteenth century, charming the reader with their personal and conversational tone. Themes explored were such of nostalgia, compassion, and regret. Featuring 'Dream-Children' and 'Old China', two of the most popular essays in the collection. From the library of L. Harrison Matthews, British zoologist known for his work on marine mammals. CONDITION In a half calf binding over marbled boards, new endpapers. Externally generally sound with shelf wear, lightly chipped to extremities, boards and spine rubbed, joints starting, boards holding firm. L. Harrison Matthews' ownership inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting to first and last few leaves, otherwise pages bright and clean throughout.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
