The Token and Atlantic Souvenir, A Christmas and New Year’s Present Edited by S.G. Goodrich, American Stationer’s Company, Boston, 1838, 312 pp, illustrated, full blind stamped leather, 8.5 x 5.5”, 8vo. In fair condition. Light wear to extremities with scuffing to edges and corners. Joints abraded with slight loss. Gilt stamp in center of vase with flowers slightly worn, but intact. All edges gilt. Marbled end papers free of ownership. Illustrated title and preliminaries loose. Light toning throughout with instances of soiling and age stain. Some tissue guards are torn, others missing. Scribbles from a child in graphite throughout, randomly. Light offsetting from plates. Typical age-related wear. Binding intact. Please see photos. Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was an American novelist and short story writer. His works often focus on history, morality, and religion. Hawthorne usually centers his writing on New England, & many feature anti-Puritan inspiration. His fiction works are considered part of the Romantic movement, and, more specifically, dark romanticism. Literary contributions in this gift book are dominated by Hawthorne, including, Sylph Etherege , Peter Goldthwaite's Treasure , Endicott and the Red Cross , Night Sketches , Beneath an Umbrella , and The Shaker Bridal.
