Description

The Guardian was a shortage-lived paper published in London from March 12 to October 1 of 1713 by Richard Steele with contributions from Joseph Addison, Thomas Tickell, Alexander Pope and Ambrose Philips. It contained miscellaneous anecdotes, stories and reviews concerning 18th century London. This pair of volumes have leather bindings and scuffed edges with the name “Luther Loomis/New York/1812” inside. Loomis was a successful businessman in New York and Connecticut. The volumes are in good condition with solid blocks. Both have nice frontispieces which seem to be topical commentary and an occasional illustration with one of these having a decoration by Loomis on the verso (see photo). There is foxing throughout both volumes and some slight damage to the spines. Nice pair of volumes with commentary on the literary society of 18th century London. Good Condition: 12mo: full leather with scuffing and rub to both: peeled strip on back of both: both volumes have reddish-brown labels with gilt lettering and gilt decorations: spine are quite rubbed with volume one having slight damage to the tail, causing a small section at the bottom rear to be lifted (about an half an inch) and the beginning of a split at the hinges: cracked inside hinges at front: name inside front on free endpaper in ink in both volumes and at rear of volume one in pencil: engraved frontispiece in both and at least one additional illustration in each: slightly bent corners with loss of material: “The Guardian in Two Volumes”: Richard Steele, Joseph Addison, et al: New York: A(braham) O. This book far exceeded my expectations! It’s in the most pristine condition of any of the old books that I own. Robins Rare Books is amazing. Always a great value, very well packaged, quick shipping and always as described. I am a repeat customer and will always check listing from this seller first when I’m in the market for an antiquarian book.

This arrived safely and it was well packaged. This is exactly as described and it included a thank you on a postcard. This was well thought out and the seller knows how to handle and ship rare books. This was worth more than it was sold for, in my opinion, and I greatly appreciate doing business with this person.
