Complete in three volumes. Illustrated with a frontispiece to each volume. Henri Estienne's controversial work on Herodotus. In these three volumes Estienne describes a series of strange stories from Herodotus' life, creating parallels to equally strange stories from Estienne's own times, in a very satirical look at his contemporary world. Estienne's contempt for his society stirred much controversy, including with Genevan churchmen, with Estienne describing his thoughts of the failings of priests; this led to Estienne to be arrested and being obliged to cancel the offending pages. Though the work was offensive to some, it still proved to be incredibly popular, going through twelve editions within sixteen years. Estienne was a sixteenth century French classical scholar. This work was first published in 1566. Herodotus was a Greek historian was the Persian Empire, best known for his 'Histories', a detailed account of the Greco-Persian Wars. He is generally regarded to be 'The Father of History'. A new edition with notes and remarks by Mr. Duchat. CONDITION In a full mottled calf binding. Very speedy delivery and extremely well packaged. The book is in wonderful condition for age, better I think than described. This now sits alongside a companion volume, another work of Worcestershire historian and antiquarian, John Noak. I very much looking forward to reading it. As for price, I snatched the offer and am extremely pleased that I did. This seller is a perfect find on eBay and I would purchase from them without hesitation, saved seller, excellent.
