Description

Q. Curtii Rufi, Historiarum libri, accuratissime editi. Amstelodami: Ex officina Ezeviriana, Annos 1660, House of Elzevir Publishing, early 19th century binding, 338 pp, 5 x 3", 32mo. In fair condition. Leather boards are scuffed at edges & worn/bumped at corners. Tail of leather spine lacking - binding exposed. Leather spine beginning to chip. Gilt lettering, ruling, and motifs soiled and dulled, but still legible. Marbled end-papers (also early 19th century) are clean. Engraved title page exhibits a small tear at head of page - does not impede plate. Light toning throughout text-block, some instances of light age-stains & finger-soiling. A complete work - no missing pages. Binding intact, hinges slightly fragile. Please see photos. Elzevir is the name of a family of Dutch booksellers, publishers, and printers of the 17th and early 18th centuries. The duodecimo series of "Elzevirs" became very famous and very desirable among bibliophiles (like ourselves), who sought to obtain the tallest and freshest copies of these books. Although it appears the family was involved with the book trade as early as the 16th century, it is only known for its work in some detail beginning with Lodewijk Elzevir. The family ceased printing 1712, but a contemporary publisher Elsevier (founded in 1880), took over, for marketing purposes, the named logo of this early modern business, but without having any real historical connections to it. Quintus Curtius Rufus was a Roman historian, probably of the first century, author of his only known and only surviving work, Historian Alexandri Magni, "Histories of Alexander the Great." Much of it is missing. Apart from his manuscripts, nothing else certain is known about him. This fact along has led philologists to believe that he had another historical identity, to which, due other accidents of the time, the link has been broken. A few theories exist, and they are treated with varying degrees of credibility. RAREE1660DHIB - 11/23 - HK915 FORN-SHELF-0465-BB-2411-HKREV280

This book far exceeded my expectations! It’s in the most pristine condition of any of the old books that I own. Robins Rare Books is amazing. Always a great value, very well packaged, quick shipping and always as described. I am a repeat customer and will always check listing from this seller first when I’m in the market for an antiquarian book.

This arrived safely and it was well packaged. This is exactly as described and it included a thank you on a postcard. This was well thought out and the seller knows how to handle and ship rare books. This was worth more than it was sold for, in my opinion, and I greatly appreciate doing business with this person.
