In addition to the text of the first volume of "Dead Souls", this edition reproduces two intermediate editions of the second volume, the final version of which was burned by the author in 1852. The book reproduces the complete set of illustrations (365 drawings) created by twelve Russian artists for the St. Petersburg edition of A. F. Marx (1901). The appendix contains an article and commentary by Y. V. Mann, a leading expert on the work of Nikolai Gogol, as well as a historical and analytical essay on the illustration of Gogol's poem in the 19th century, written especially for this edition by the St. Petersburg art historian D. Y. Severyukhin. The text is printed according to the edition: Gogol N. V. Collected Works: In 7 vol. М., 1967. Т. 5. The illustrations are reproduced from the edition: Gogol N. V. The Phenomena of Chichikov, or Dead Souls. St. Petersburg, 1901. ABOUT ILLUSTRATIONS By the time of the release of a luxurious edition of Nikolai Gogol's poem "The Phenomena of Chichikov, or Dead Souls", undertaken by A. F. Marx in 1901, the history of illustrating "Dead Souls" had already numbered more than half a century. At the same time, the appearance of each new series of illustrations necessarily aroused heated discussions that reflected not only the next stage in the development of artistic tastes of society, but also some dynamics of perception of Gogol's poem itself, which changed from generation to generation and from era to era.
